Managing observations
|
The main entity types (entities being characters, places, objects, and events) have
observations associated with them. These are personal observations you have made
yourself about the appearance, feeling, mentality, etc. of a character; about the
appearance, sounds, feelings that it evokes, etc. of a place; and so on. These act
like questionnaires for you to complete about your character, place, object or event
before you started writing about it. They are the best way to get to know a character
etc. before you begin writing.
The observations are created in each of the add new wizards -
add new character, add new place,
add new thing, and add new event. You can
modify your observations in the properties window when
you select any of these kinds of entity.
You may just want to stick to the predefined sets of questions. Alternatively you
can add new categories of questions (like adding another sheet to a questionnaire)
and you can add new questions within them (like adding another question to a sheet
within the questionnaire).
For instance in the add new character wizard there is an observations page:
To add a new category of question, click the add category button. This
is like adding a sheet to your questionnaire. It is not a means to answer any of
the existing questions. To answer a question simply select it in the tree then type
in the relevant box on the right hand side. Existing categories for characters include
appearance, personality and mood, likes and dislikes
etc. Clicking the add category button shows the following dialog. Simply type a
name for your new category and click ok.
Once you have created a new category you may wish to add a new question within it.
To do so click the add question button. This shows the following dialog. Simply
type the name of your question. Then click OK.
Important: You should be wary about deleting categories or questions. Doing
so deletes the question from the whole range of entities. For instance deleting
the "do they like animals?" question from one character deletes the question - and
all your answers - for all characters.
Reordering questions and categories of questions
You can reorder questions and categories of questions as you wish using the orange
up and down buttons.
