Add a place / setting
|
This wizard takes you through the steps to add a new place. You need to complete
the whole wizard in order to add the place. Once your place has been added it will
appear in your novel explorer. If you select the
place in the novel explorer, the properties window
will contain all of the information you have entered in this wizard, so that you
can amend it later. Your new place will always be appended to the bottom of the
places section of the novel explorer. You can drag places around in the novel explorer
to reorder them. If you are using the 'expert
novel explorer' you can also arrange your places into as many folders
as you wish in order for you to categorize them.
Step 1 : Place name and description
The first stage of the new place wizard allows you to give the name of the new place
and a brief description of it. If you are struggling to give a name to your new
place, and are a registered user, the get
inspiration for a new place button may help. In particular the
online wizard is good for English-sounding town names, house names, etc.
The notes that you add here can automatically be included in your glossary.
For more information see generating a glossary.
Step 2 : Place observations
The next stage of the wizard allows / forces you to flesh out your place or setting
by asking your questions about what it looks like, what it feels like to be there
etc. You can customize the categories of questions and the questions if you wish.
For more information see the observations topic.
Step 3 : Place images
The next stage of the wizard allows you to add images / pictures for you place.
Add pictures which evoke your own feelings about the place, so that you can refer
back to them whenever you want to refresh your ideas about a certain place.
If you add this place to a diagram the first image will be shown within the diagram.
For more information see the diagram editor. NB:
if you do not have save image thumbnails inside MyNovel files checked in
preferences (it is checked by default) then MyNovel only
links to the images. If you move the novel to another computer all of your thumbnails
/ images will be invalidated.
Step 4 : Place research
The next stage of the wizard allows you to link to web pages and other files for
research purposes about this new place. You may have no research yet. You can add
links at any time by selecting the place after you have created it in the
novel explorer, then looking at the properties of the place in the
properties window.
Step 5 : Place relationships
The final stage of the wizard allows you to relate this place to other entities
in your novel - entities being characters, places, things and events. For instance
if the new place is a house and you know a particular character lives there, add
the character as a relationship to this place. Subsequently were you to add both
the character and the place to a diagram via the diagram
editor, this link will be shown.
Once you have finished, click the finish button. Your place will be added
to your novel and selected in the novel explorer,
and therefore it's properties will be shown in the properties
window.
To delete a place or setting once you have added it, you need to select the event
in the novel explorer then right-click on it in
the novel explorer to bring up the context menu. For more information see the novel explorer topic.
