Add an event
|
This wizard takes you through the steps to add a new event. You need to complete
the whole wizard in order to add the event. Once your event has been added it will
appear in your novel explorer. If you select the
event in the novel explorer, the properties window
will contain all of the information you have entered in this wizard, so that you
can amend it later. Your new event will always be appended to the bottom of the
events section of the novel explorer. You can drag events around in the novel explorer
to reorder them. If you are using the 'expert
novel explorer' you can also arrange your events into as many folders
as you wish in order for you to categorize them.
In MyNovel events are a generic term for a happening in your novel, a plot development,
a stage, a scene, a character transformation, a plot development, etc. Each chapter
you write may contain one or more events. Events, in the MyNovel
sense, are a very useful planning tool. They are the building blocks from which
you will build the plot for your novel. You can also add events to diagrams, to
build timelines and draw the chronology of events.
The idea is that you think about the rough selection of events (possibly without
knowing in which order you intend to sequence them) that will comprise your novel
before you begin writing it. You then figure out in what order to place them in.
Then you write your novel.
Step 1 : Event name and description
In the first stage of the wizard you give the event a name - e.g. Tom and Jinny
get married. You choose the event type (merely as an aide memoire for yourself),
and give the event a description.
The notes that you add here can automatically be included in your glossary.
For more information see generating a glossary.
Step 2 : Event observations
In the next stage of the wizard, you flesh the event out by adding observations.
In general an event transforms one or more characters in some way. Hence the predefined
questions ask you questions about the states of the involved characters before the
event and after the event. And also ask you about what causes the transformation.
E.g. Tom and Jinny get married. Beforehand they are happy - perhaps stressed about
the marriage ahead. Afterwards they are happily married, perhaps. What caused the
transformation? Well, was it merely a matter of love? Was it a shotgun wedding?
Were other factors involved? You can change or augment the predefined categories
of questions and questions if you wish. For more information see the
managing observations topic.
Step 3 : Event images
The next stage of the wizard allows you to add images / pictures to your event.
If it is a wedding you may wish to add images of weddings, wedding receptions, etc.
to your event. You can add as many images as you like.
If you add this event to a diagram the first image will be shown within the diagram.
For more information see the diagram editor. NB:
if you do not have save image thumbnails inside MyNovel files checked in
preferences (it is checked by default) then MyNovel only
links to the images. If you move the novel to another computer all of your thumbnails
/ images will be invalidated.
Step 4 : Event research
In the next stage of the wizard you can add links to research you may have done
about the event. You can link to web pages and files on your computer.
Step 5 : Event relationships
The final stage of the wizard allows you to relate the event to other entities within
your novel. For instance your event may involve certain characters - you should
add relationships to those characters here. Or this event may follow another event
and you should add a relationship to the other event. The relationships you create
here are automatically shown on diagrams if you add the event and the related-to
entity to the diagram. For more information see the managing
relationships topic and editing diagrams.
Once you have finished, click the finish button. Your event will be added
to your novel and selected in the novel explorer,
and therefore it's properties will be shown in the properties
window.
To delete an event once you have added it, you need to select the event in the novel explorer then right-click on it in the novel
explorer to bring up the context menu. For more information see the
novel explorer topic.
