Add a chapter
To display this wizard, click the add chapter button on the MyNovel tab of the ribbon control.
This wizard takes you through the steps to add a new chapter. You need to complete
the whole wizard in order to add the chapter. Once your chapter has been added it
will appear in your novel explorer , and a text
editor will be opened in order for you to write the chapter. If you select the chapter
in novel explorer, the properties window will contain
all of the information you have entered in this wizard, so that you can amend it
later. Your new chapter will always be appended at the bottom of the chapters section
of the novel explorer. You can drag chapters around in the novel explorer to reorder
to them. If you are using the 'expert novel explorer'
you can also arrange your chapters into as many folders as you wish in order for
you to categorize them.
Step 1
On the first page you give your chapter a name, even if it is just 'Chapter 1'.
You can also type some notes about what you intend to happen during this chapter.
If you are struggling to invent a name or purpose for your chapter and you are a
registered user, click the get inspiration for a new chapter
button. This will take you directly to the inspiration section of the MyNovel website.

Step 2
The second stage of the wizard is where you can add images to your chapter. Images
are, of course, useful aides memoires you can use to inspire you to write the chapter.
NB: if you do not have save image thumbnails inside MyNovel files checked in
preferences (it is checked by default) then MyNovel only links to the images.
If you move the novel to another computer all of your thumbnails will be invalidated.

Step 3
The third stage of the wizard is where you can add links to research to your chapter:
links to web pages and other files you might find useful in writing the chapter.
As with all the properties, you can change these later in the
properties window.

Add a chapter - step 3
Step 4
The fourth stage of the wizard is where you can store notes against the chapter.
You may have none at this stage. You can add more notes later in the
properties window.

Add a chapter - step 4
Step 5
Each chapter can have its own diagram in order for you to visualize the order of
events in the chapter. To add entities to the diagram, use the add button. All the
links between all of the entities you include on the diagram are automatically shown.
To remove an entity select it and click the cut button. This is a mini version of
the diagram editor specifically for use with the current chapter. You will be able
to change the diagram later using the properties window.
You can also add text, images and lines to your diagram. For more information on
editing diagrams, refer to the diagram editor topic.

Add a chapter - step 5
Step 6
At this stage you can also define the events which happen in this chapter. Events
are added with a separate wizard - see the add event wizard.
Alternatively, you can do this later by assigning an event
to a chapter. Either way, the basis is that MyNovel enables you to assign
any number of events / happenings / scenes to a chapter (the expectation is that
you "implement" the events in the given chapter.) Please note: an event can only
occur in one chapter. Tick all of the events that are going to happen in this chapter.
You can also add notes regarding the event on the right hand side. If you don't
have any events yet, or you are not sure about the events that will happen in this
chapter, you can safely skip this stage. You can add the events later in the
properties window.

Add a chapter - step 6
Step 7
This step of the wizard enables you to choose the type of text editor you wish to
use for this chapter. If you choose an external text editor such as Microsoft Word
or Open Office then the file will be created for you in the working folder you specified
when creating the novel .
Add a chapter - step 7
Once you have finished, click the finish button. Your chapter will be added to your
novel and will be ready for you to type into. The chapter will also be selected
in the novel explorer, and therefore it's properties
will be shown in the properties window. To delete a
chapter once you have added it, you need to select the chapter in the
novel explorer then right-click on it in the novel explorer to bring up
the context menu. For more information see the novel explorer
topic .
