Novel writing templates
MyNovel, our software for any budding new novelist, is supplied with a range of
novel writing templates. Besides the Hero's journey template,
we include specialized character-driven and plot-driven templates, some of which
are listed below. NB: the use of a novel writing template is entirely optional.
More seasoned writers can write without the use of a template.
Character driven
Character driven novels are those where the author focusses on one or more central
characters. The novel is about their personal lives, their motivations, the changes
that happen to them because of events in their lives.
-
Love / romance
MyNovel includes a template for writing love and romance stories.
Love isn't true unless it has been tested. In novels at least, love should always
be met with a major obstacle. The lovers are usually incompatible in some way. Love
stories do not have to have happy endings - either fate or incompatibility can result
in permanent separation.
-
Quest
Mynovel includes a template for writing quest stories.
The quest is the protagonist's search for a person, place or thing. The main character
is specifically looking for something that he or she hopes or expects to be life-changing.
The quest very heavily depends on the protagonist's character and personality. There
should be a very clear difference between the state of the main character at the
start of the novel compared to the state of the main character at the end.
Plot driven
Plot-driven novels are those where the emphasis is on action and plot rather than
character development. Although some character development does occur in plot-driven
novels, this is of secondary importance to the plot.
-
Adventure
MyNovel includes a template for writing adventure stories.
The adventure resembles the quest in many ways. However the quest is a character
driven plot where the transformation of the main character is an emotional one,
and where the frailties and strengths of the main character are all-important. The
adventure on the other hand is plot-driven where the focus of the story is 'the
action'. Most action stores and movies follow this theme.
-
Pursuit
MyNovel includes a template for writing pursuit stories.
In a pursuit story, one person chases another. It is a plot-driven story. The plot
is more important than the characters per se. Structurally, this is one of the simplest
plots of all: there is a pursued character and a pursuer. The situation must be
established quickly. The pursuit comprises the majority of the story. The resolution
is also quick.
-
Rescue
MyNovel includes a template for writing rescue stories.
In a rescue story, the antagonist has separated another character, ordinarily a
loved one, away from the protagonist. This kind of story is the protagonist's pursuit
of the antagonist in order to rescue the abducted person. The protagonist in such
a story is generally defined by the relationship he or she has with the abductee.
For instance the protagonist may be aparent, the antagonist another adult, and the
abductee a child.
-
Revenge
MyNovel includes a template for writing revenge stories.
In a revenge story, the motivation for revenge is clear and profound. The protagonist
is to retaliate against the antagonist for real or imagined injury. Almost always,
the revenge is outside the limits of the law.
